Launch of Brazilian Programa para o Futuro: dot-ORG

 On March 19th in Recife, Brazil, USAID/Brazil and dot-ORG hosted an event to official launch of Programa para o Futuro, the USAID/Brazil project being carried out by dot-ORG, and to highlight the signing ceremony of USAID/Brazil's Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with private and public sector organizations committing themselves to improving employment opportunities for disadvantaged youth.
Several prominent American and Brazilian officials attended the event including Adolfo Franco, the USAID Assistant Administrator for Latin America and the Caribbean, Donna J. Hrinak, US Ambassador in Brazil, Rubem Fonseca, Secretary of Education for Brazil, Hose Mendoca, Vice Governor of Pernambuco, João Paulo Lima, Mayor of Recife, Claudio Marinho, Secretary of Science and Technology, Richard J. Goughnour, USAID/Brazil Mission Director, Nena Lentini, USAID/Brazil Program Officer, and over 100 representatives from Brazil's private, government and NGO sectors attended this successful event. 
The launch ceremony included a fashion show organized by USAID/Brazil POMMAR program where young Brazilians modeled clothes that had been designed and made by disadvantaged youth. The event participants were also entertained by youth from another USAID/Brazil funded project who performed traditional Brazilian dances.
Public-Private Sector Partnerships
This dot-ORG project is being implemented in Recife through a collaborative effort of four Brazilian NGOs. These include three Recife-based NGOs CDI-Pernambuco, Casa de Passagem and Porto Digital and one Brasilia-based NGO LTNet-Brasil.
In addition to these collaborative partners, the project has attracted substantial private sector participation. Specifically:
- The Bank of Brasil in Recife is contributing two spacious rooms on the 9th floor of their modern 10 story office for the project's training facility;
- IBM/Brasil is providing all the computers for the training program funding for the youth's uniforms and money to allow the program to purchase peripherals;
- Microsoft/Brazil, through a relationship with CDI-Pernambuco, is contributing Microsoft software for the training;
- The State Government of Pernambuco through the Special Secretary for Human Rights is providing funding from Brazil's "First Job" program to partly cover the costs of training, internships and the first year's employment; and
- The Federal Government's Ministry of Justice is providing sponsorship fees to partly cover the training costs for youth from their programs in Recife.
Broad-Based Support
One of the highlights of the March 19th event was the official signing of the MOU between USAID/Brasil and the following 15 public and private supporters of USAID/Brazil's program for youth employability.

Overview of Project
Programa para o Futuro is an 18-month pilot IT technical support training and employability project for disadvantaged youth, with a special focus on meeting the needs of young women. 
In April, the project's trainers will participate in an intensive training-of-trainers activity using an innovative curricula and training approach developed by LTNet-Brasil. Also in April, the four collaborating NGOs under the leadership of staff from Casa de Passagem, will recruit the youth who will participate. CDI-Pernambuco has taken the lead to establish the training lab in the rooms provided by the Bank of Brasil and Porto Digital has focused on creating an exciting e-mentoring program and providing free Internet access for the training lab.
AED was awarded the Brazil Project in November 1, 2002 for a period of 18 months (Award No. 512-A-00-02-00017-00 under the dot-ORG Leader Award No.GDG-A-00-01-00014-00.)
