Online Professional Development for Educators
Investment in universal education has demonstrated value in improving people's ability to increase income generation and to reduce poverty. As increasing numbers of children enroll in school, there is a concomitant urgency to expand the number of qualified teachers.

Yet many developing countries face tight financial and logistic constraints that challenge their efforts to provide professional development to all teachers.

One approach to solving this problem is to offer professional development opportunities online. Join us as we explore whether online training for teachers in developing countries is effective and cost-efficient.

What does online professional development offer that is not otherwise possible? What approaches work the best, under what circumstances? What tools are most effective? Cost-efficient? Appropriate to various infrastructure and other constraints?

Post-Event Discussion on Global Knowledge Discussion List
In addition to the discussion immediately following the presentations, an online discussion list has been established to further debate the topic, courtesy of the Global Knowledge Discussion List (GKD), hosted by the Education Development Center.

As of May 24, participants will have the opportunity to share their experiences, lessons learned and best practices in this area. After a month of discussion, a white paper will be developed by DOT-COM, InterAction, and EDC. [For more information on how to join the list]

DOT-COM/InterAction ICT Speaker Series Background
The DOT-COM/InterAction ICT Speaker Series, funded by USAID (DOT-COM) and the Markle Foundation (InterAction ICT Working Group), is intended to explore ways in which Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) impact development efforts.

The main goals of the speaker series include sharing information about innovative and effective uses of technology in development efforts, building a community around a broad spectrum of information technology interests, and exploring gaps and challenges to effective implementation and use of technologies in our work.
