ICTs to Strengthen Intercultural, Bilingual Educators in Quiché, Guatemala
USAID/Guatemala-Central American Programs (G-CAP) has signed an Associate Award with dot-EDU to expand the success of an existing activity in the Quiché region that is using ICTs to strengthen the training of intercultural, bilingual educators.
This existing activity, Proyecto Enlace Quiché, was conducted under the LearnLink contract and established computer-assisted teacher training centers in five of the region's teacher training schools (escuelas normales).
These centers house up to 12 multimedia workstations and a variety of peripherals that have enabled these pre-service primary school teachers to access a wealth of resources to strengthen their Mayan language skills and create their own customized language learning resources and tools. These ICT tools are helping to prepare these pre-service teachers to give primary school instruction in Mayan languages, a requirement of the Peace Accords that ended Guatemala's civil war.
dot-EDU has been requested to expand on the experience of the LearnLink Project and extend this innovative activity to seven new teacher training schools. Additional electronic language learning resources will be created by a project team, and by the pre-service teachers themselves, all of which will be shared freely throughout this expanded network of school-based computer centers, and with other partner organizations that are working to build teacher capacity in the Quiché region.
EDC was awarded the G/EGAT/EIT Project on June 6, 2002 for 20 months (Award No. GDG-A-00-01-00011-00 under the dot-EDU Leader Award No: GDG-A-00-01-00011-00).
