Prince Georges Community College
Project or Department: Center for Academic Resource Development
Prince George's Community College (PGCC), established in 1958, offers more than 1,400 courses every semester and over 30 programs of study including career programs that prepare students for immediate entry into the work force and transfer programs that provide the first two years of study towards a bachelor's degree. The college also offers programs leading to a one-year certificate or a letter of recognition. Over 35,000 students attend annually; half take credit and half take continuing education courses. The college serves a student body that is 85% minority, so it is well acquainted with the challenges of reaching disadvantaged students. With 13% of the students foreign-born, the college personnel serve a widely diverse group of students. College ICT experience includes: 1. Distance learning technologies and pedagogy training in Poland, South Africa, Ethopia, Rwanda, Denmark, and the Philippines. 2. IT training of school teachers in Word, Excel, Windows, and of university faculty in Internet Literacy in South Africa. 3. C++ and Computer Literacy in Rwanda. The college has just embarked on two new projects. 1. Providing job-shadowing; student-teacher type experiences; pedagogy workshops; science, mathematics and technology institutes; Blackboard training, and a leadership, curriculum development and assessment institute in the U.S. for 176 South African 10th, 11th, and 12th grade math, science and technology teachers, administrators, and Department of Education officials over a 3-year period. Training will occur in the U.S. but mentoring will continue via Blackboard once participants return to South Africa. 2. Professors from PGCC and the National University of Rwanda will provide direct hands-on training to 72 secondary school teachers representing 72 secondary schools in Windaows and Microsoft Office at the NUR using instructional CD's created by University of Maryland students. Teachers will return to their schools and conduct in-service training classes for other teachers in their schools.
