Full Description: As a follow-on to the dot-EDU pilot activities in the Democratic Republic of Congo, EDCs support of USAIDs Strategic Objective Improving Basic Education, Especially Girls in Targeted Areas provides an important opportunity to benefit from recent lessons learned and apply this experience to programming that will have greater reach and more ambitious objectives.
As such, EDC activities will be expanded to reach a greater number of educators, community members, and students and aim to have longer-term impact in the communities targeted by the initiative. The project has set goals to show gains in improved teaching practices via video-enhanced teacher professional development and teacher support; provide teachers and students with increased access to learning materials, textbooks, and kits via the effective distribution of materials; increase community participation in education, management and outreach activities; increase and improve girls participation in school via an appropriate and sound strategy developed in coordination with girls scholarship program; continuation of Vanga Telecenter activities, and contribute to increased access, retention, and achievement of students, especially girls, in the target areas via a combination of project inputs.
Update 1 (January-March 2005):
Activities in this period have included 1) the finalization of the Work Plan and M&E performance indicators as well as needs assessment report; 2) training of local researchers to do baseline data collection; 3) training of trainers and training of teachers.
Update 2(October-December 2005):
Training on supervisory techniques to 112 supervisors took place all 3 provinces. The training was aimed at presenting activities supporting the adoption of strategies that help transform the supervisors role and image from an inspector looking for mistakes to a supervisor supporting teachers in improving their practice in the classroom thus achieving inclusive development in the educational process.
Classroom observation/Reinforcement, follow-up and video analysis activities have taken place in all 3 provinces.
On going Community Participation activities by development feedback survey forms developed, following up and conducting support visits conducted and feedback collected and preparing for the training of trainers of 6 provincial EDC staff and 60 community facilitators. Similarly, sustainability of the Vanga Community Center is ensured by EDC and AED Senior staff. The fourth round of M&E Data collection has been held.
Development of materials for trainers (15 EDC staff + 120 Supervisors) and teachers (720) are in the process of draft and final review in preparation of the final stage of Training Activities.
Distribution of Materials:
- Teacher and trainer kits: 900 kits (840 teachers/dir, 60 trainers)
- Reference books: 3000 books have been distributed to teachers in the three provinces
- National Curriculum: 912 copies distributed to teachers.
