Full Description: USAID/Mozambique has a tourism program in the early implementation stage that geographically focuses on three priority tourism areas: the Querimbas archipelago, the Bazaruto Islands, and Gorongosa National Park. Gorongosa National Park was one of the top parks on the African continent until it was totally decimated during the long Mozambican struggle for independence and subsequent civil war. Thanks to generous support from the Carr Foundation and their partnership with the Government of Mozambique and USAID, Gorongosa is starting down the path towards reattaining its former glory, bringing badly- needed economic development opportunities to this very rural area. One of the main goals of this Last Mile Initiative is to ensure that innovative telecommunications technologies and business models are an integral part of the Gorongosa park and tourism development program and to identify the best models to later replicate in Querimbas and Bazaruto.
The Carr Foundation will be the lead implementer of the Last Mile Initiative project which will include the following components:
Bringing broadband to Gorongosa National Park and to communities in the buffer zone;
Core funding for the DOT-COM Alliance is provided by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Bureau for Economic Growth, Agriculture & Trade, Office of Infrastructure and Engineering (EGAT/OI&E), Office of Education (EGAT/ED), and Office of Women in Development (EGAT/WID), under the terms of Award numbers: GDG-A-00-01-00009-00, dot-GOV; GDG-A-00-01-00014-00, dot-ORG; GDG-A-00-01-00011-00, dot-EDU.
