Full Description: USAID/ANE funded a workshop and the Annual General Meeting of the Union of Arab Information and Communication Technologies (known by its Arab acronym, IJMA3). The IJMA3 meeting was organized by the dot-GOV program and funded by USAID/ANE Bureau and the UN ICT Regional Task Force. The Union made a powerful case for regional cooperation at its third Annual General Meeting, held in Sharm-El- Sheikh, Egypt, from 28 February - 2 March 2005. Forty representatives from Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Bahrain, Yemen, Algeria, Morocco, Syria and Tunisia attended. A new president was elected from [email protected] Jordan and Union members continued the process of consolidation in becoming the primary regional network for ICT associations in the area. An Information Technology Mentors Workshop focused on practical exercises on how to create an organizational environment that is attractive to all members; this was important as delegates from international companies also attended as observers. Guest speakers Dennis Panther, USAID/Egypt and Talal Abu-Gazaleh, from the United Nations Task Force saluted the IJMA3's potential to become a central player in the economic development of the region. The workshop was organized by dot-Gov and delivered by consultants from the World Information Technology Services Association and Computer Frontiers Inc. IJMA3 is better prepared to champion the interests of member associations in domestic and regional ICT forums, and members have been encouraged to develop standards and performance guidelines in their ICT communities. IJMA3 has emerged as a stronger organization with the support from members to play a regional role in the promotion of ICTs in economic development.
USAID/ANE funded dot-GOV to bring in five speakers for the workshop on Access to Broadband: Universal Service Opportunities and Challenges held prior to the IJMA3 events at Sharm El-Sheikh. This workshop was organized and sponsored by The National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency of Egypt and the International Telecommunications Union.
Update: Completed in 2005.
